July 2026 SAIL Athletic Updates

 

SAIL ATHLETIC UPDATES 2026 - Aug-Sept

 

SAIL Athletics is preparing for the upcoming fall sports season and encourages families of interested student-athletes to complete the athletic interest form. Middle school participation in all sports requires a current sports physical and a complete DragonFly profile with all required forms submitted.

 

We are including all sports in these updates that involve our athletes representing SAIL. This includes some clubs and leagues. We cannot wait to see our student-athletes work hard, support one another as they grow, and hit the court, field, and trail! 

Key Fall Sports Information

Tackle Football (Grades 7–8)

  • SAIL combines with Quail Hollow Falcons football and the workouts begin Monday, August 3 at 6:00 PM.
  • Workouts will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays and last approximately 45–60 minutes.
  • Athletes must bring cleats and gym shoes.
  • Football is a self-selecting sport; summer participation is strongly encouraged for team placement.
  • Official tryouts begin during the first week of school.

Tackle Football

 

 

Volleyball (Grades 7–8)

  • Open gyms will be held every Tuesday and Thursday in August from 2:00–4:00 PM.
  • Open to all students planning to try out for the school team.
  • Official tryouts will take place during the first week of school on TUESDAY 25, WEDNESDAY 26, and THURSDAY 27. 
  • Current physicals and DragonFly clearance are required to participate.
  • PARENT MEETING: Monday 8/31 immediately following the first practice 
  • For those who make the school team:  practice will start Monday 8/31 from 3:30p-5pm.

Girls Flag Football (Grades 6–8; limited Grade 5 participation)

  • Interest meeting scheduled for August 4 at 4:30 PM in the gym.
  • Fifth-grade students may participate with parent understanding that they will train with middle school athletes.
  • Tryouts may be conducted if interest exceeds available roster spots.

Flag Football 2026

 

Basketball (Grades 4-6, 7&8)

  • Open gyms begin on Friday, September 4.
  • Families should notify Coach Jones if their child intends to participate.

Golf (Grades 7&8)

  • SAIL's team combines with Alex Graham
  • Try outs are on 8/31, more info to come

Softball (Grades 7&8)

  • SAIL's team combines with Quail Hollow
  • Tryouts are 8/25-8/27, 4:30-6 at Quail Hollow

Cross Country (Grades 3-5; 6-8)

  • Grades 6-8 will need to upload their students' physicals to dragonflymax.com starting this year. Elementary will not need to do so.
  • The first practice starts on Tuesday, September 7th.
  • Practices are every Tuesday and Thursday through November.  
  • Four competitions will be held throughout the season on two Saturday and two Sunday mornings.
  • Registration is open: REGISTER NOW
  • If your student is in Tackle Football, Flag Football, or Volleyball, they can also be in cross country. Please speak with one of the cross country coaches on the details.

Girls on the Run (Grades 3-5)

  • Mondays and Wednesdays afterschool, more information to come

Important Eligibility Requirements

Students must have:

  • A current sports physical on file.
  • A complete DragonFly profile.
  • All required athletic forms signed.

Students who have not completed these requirements will not be permitted to participate in practices, tryouts, or transportation to Quail Hollow Middle School athletic events.

Recognition and Partnerships

Congratulations to Coach Brandon Blacklie, Quail Hollow Middle School Athletic Director, for being named CMS District Athletic Director of the Year. SAIL partners with Quail Hollow for football, softball, and baseball programs.

Communication and Updates

Families are encouraged to join the sport-specific Band groups for updates regarding:

  • Volleyball

  • Basketball
  • Soccer
  • Track

Volunteer Opportunities

SAIL Athletics is seeking:

  • Bus drivers
  • Flag football coaches

  • Game-day volunteers

Football workouts for rising 7th and 8th graders will begin on:

Let’s get to work and build something special this season.

 

We will be having volleyball open gyms every Tuesday and Thursday in August. Open gym will be 2-4 in the gym. This open gym is open to all 7th and 8th graders trying out for the school team this season. Tryouts will be the whole 1st week of school. All athletes attending open gyms and training will need to have an updated physical in dragonfly. Students will not be able to participate without a current sports physical on file. 

 

We are also having a flag football interest meeting Tuesday Aug4  in the gym @ 4:30pm. Our flag team this year will consist of 6-8th graders. We are open to 5th graders as long as parents understand they will be playing up and against other CMS Middle schoolers.  

If we have a good turn out at the meeting we may need to have a tryout. Which will be the following week.
